Scary Christmas

Seasons greeting true belivers. It must be that time of year again, presants, misietoe, snow, carols and Christmas specials. These maybe the things we associate with Christmas in America, but many cultures and countries have a rather dark history to the holiday.

The winter holiday predates the brith of Christ as a celbration of revival of the sun and returing of the greens of the earth. As the nights become longer, demons and dark spirits roam the baren wastlands in search for misbehaving children.

Krampus: A demon that accompanies  St Nicolas on Christmas Eve in the Bavarian countries. While good children are rewarded with gifts from St Nick, Krampus punishes the naughty. 

Kallikantzaros: Impish goblins hailing from Greece. They enjoy causing mayhem, espicaly on Christmas Eve.

Gryla: An ogress form Iceland that has been known to kidnap naughty children on Christmas Eve. She is the mother of the Yule lads and the owner to the Yule cat.

Boogers and Haints

The regions of the Ozark Moutians is filled with frighening folktales and ghost stories of ghosts, witches, and monsters that haunt the wilderness of mountians and forests. The ghosts and goblins are prefered to  be call boogers and haints. 

The word booger originates from the Old World English term of bogeyies of bogeymen. Goblin like entities that are known for terrorizing misbehaving children in the middile of the night.

One of the most iconic boogermen is Raw Head and Bloody Bones. The entity is discribed having a skined razer back hog, the eyes of an owl, the tail of a racoon, the clwas of a bear and the fangs of a mountian lion. 

Haints are what the people of the Ozark regions call ghosts or spirits, as dose the word originates from the Old World term reffering to haunt. The spirits confined to live in the woods, brooks and places of where they have died. 

Many sighting or reports of ghosts have been seen and hear in The Landers Theater, Springfeild Cemtery, and the Walnut Street Inn.

Even the roads are haunted by glow balls of light called spook lights. Some say it's the a headless hiker carrying a lantern seaching for it's head. Other cailm it's just the headlights of cars passing through. 

Devil Monkey

The Devil Monkey or Grave Diggers are dcribed as resembling a baboon with powerful kanagroo like legs, fanged teeth, and a long tail. The Devil Monkey has been sighted through out the Aplicaian Moutians of Kentucky. Reports of mutliated chinken and dogs were found by an old couple living in the western ares of Kentucky. Wiether it must have been an escape baboon from a traveling circus or a unkown speices of pimates that remain hidden within the unxplored wilderness of Kentucky.

Daniel Boon meets Bigfoot

It's every day that famous people encounter supernatural entities in their life. One of Kentucky's founding father and frontiers man, Daniel Boon claimed he had shoot and killed a creature that he refered to as a Yhoo. The creature was discribed ten feet tall, hair covering it's entire body. Weither Daniel was just making it up or he did killed the creature, it will be apart of Kentucky's unsovled mysteries of history.

The Wild Men of Kentucky

The Himalayans have the Yeti, the Passific North West Idians have Sasquatch. Here in Kentucky, they may not be the shy and elusive hairy giants. They are feicre, aggressive and more beast than man.

One encounter ocured in Henderson County around 1975, when a family took resitence in a farmhouse where beeing terrorized by a giant hairy creatrue with red eyes. It began with finding the remains of mutilated dogs out in the feild, that would then later follow by missing livestock. They then heard strange sound outside of the house. The mother of the household was the first witness to reoport seeing this creature around 8:00 in the evening, when she called her family to supper. She saw a shadowy figure of a giant standing near the shed. The terrified family had to arm and defend themselves from something they had never faced in their life before. The father graded his shotgun while the mother called for the police. The authorities searched everywhere and found nothing. 

The Little People of the Bluegrass: Part 3

In a age of computers and advanced technology, we seem to have replaced these tiny terrors into harmless trouble makers for childhood icons. Yet they're have been a series of eye witness reports with the encouters of the Little People. 

In 1990, fourteen year old Donald Patton of eastern Kentucky reported seeing two small figures when he was all alone in the woods. They were discribed being two feet tall and were dressed all in white. 

In the autumn of 1997, Sharon Rogers saw a small figure standing across the street. He was dressed in bown and tan garb, along whith a cape and a pointed hat.  

In June 24, 2003, when Steve W was on a canoeing trip at the Kentucky's Rough River. It was here that he found what appered to be a small clay pot benith the river bank. Followed by child like laughter and two little figures. They were discribed wearing leather pants with suspenders, matching pointed caps, red hair, pale skin and blue eyes.  They seem to be dragging a tree stump through the woods. 

Even today, the little spirits that once inhabited woods are now being diminished by urban devlopment from the progress of human society. However in both Ierland and Iceland, devlopments were sabotaged by unseen forces. Either it's some enviromental protesters or the little people have come to teach humainity that this is their home too.  

The Little People of the Bluegrass: Part 2

Acording to Cherokee Indian tribal legends, their is a race of fairy like beings that are said to dwell within the southern parts of the Appalachian Mountians. They are called the Nunne'hi, or the people who live forever.  Hunters would often hear the Nunnehi in the mountains, singing and dancing and beating drums, but when they would go toward the sound, it would shift about and suddenly seem to be coming from behind them or from some other direction, so that the person hearing the sound would never be able to find where it was coming from.

The Nunnehi were very friendly to the Cherokee and often helped lost wanderers, especially during the winter. The Nunnehi would take the person into their warm townhouses until the person was rested and ready to return home. The Nunnehi often warned the Cherokee of impending danger and protected them in times of need.

One Algonquian legend tells the story of the hero Glooskap and his encounters with the forces of nature. The story goes, while Glooskap was wondering in the North he came across the giant Winter. Witer was hospitabile to our hero and entertained him stories. This eventualy casued Glooskap to become covered in snow and ice, he remained frozen for six months. He ploted his revenge aginst winter.

  

While traveling southwards, he came across a grove where a troupe of little people or elves of light were dancing with their queen, Summer. Glooskap quikley snatched Summer from his hands and headed twords the north, he hid Summer within. Once inside Winter's home, he began to tell his stories. Which caused the heat of Summer to melt Winter and life returns.

  

In Henderson County, their are local legends of a mischievous spirit called the Joui-stee. They are discribed wearing pointed hats, and moccasin shoes. Their favorite pastimes are playing music and dancing. They are like the American Indian version of the Irish Leprechaun.   

But not all of the little people are freindly like the Nunnehi. Some of them are down right dangerous, like the Puckwudgies. These goblin like beings enjoy making mischief.

The Little People in the Bluegrass: Intro

Ever since our ansctors imagrated from the Old World to the New World. They brough tales of magical, but some times troublesome beings that are either helpful or harmful to humans. 

They were known as The Little People or The Fair Folk, but are comanly known as Faeries.

 They are usual depicted as winged humanoids, others were as tall, radiant, and fair humans, goblin like entities, or etherial spirits. In the oral traditions, they would cause harm to humans who would dare inslut them, such as stealing children, blamed from bringing nighmares and misfortune, or tempting humans into their world. For they are a proud race. 

Today, they have become innocuous shadows of their former self of childrens media and the insperation behind alien abductions.

Spring Heeled Jack in Lousiville

In the year 1837, London was in the mids of hystria as a phantom feind terrorized the good citizens with tremendous superhuman strength to leap over from one building to another. This entity was given the name Spring-heeled Jack. 

He was described by people who claimed to have seen him as having a terrifying and frightful appearance, with diabolical physiognomy, clawed hands, and eyes that "resembled red balls of fire". 

In 1880, reports of the same figure was then sighted in Lousiville. Frightening the loclas, leaping on top of horse drawn carriages, and the rooftops of buildings.     

The Hobgoblins of Hopkinsville

Picture if you will true belivers, the year was 1955. In the small town of Hopkinsville Kentucky, a famliy had a close encounter with little green men from Mars. 

The creatures were discribed to be three feet tall, long arms, claw like fingers, pointed ears, thin limbs and silvery skin. They also have an ability to hover above ground. 

Pope Lick Monster

Numerous urban legends exist about the creature's origins and the meathods it employs to claim it's victim. The Pope Lick Monster is discribed similar to that of a satyr, half man and half goat. On legend states that the creature was a circus freak who was mistreated and escaped after the train was derailed on the trestle. 

According to accounts, the creature uses hypnosis to lure unsuspecting victims to the trestle, where they  were actacked by the creature's axe or from an oncoming train.
